Yoohwan Kim

Assistant Professor

Dr. Yoohwan Kim is an Assistant Professor at Computer Science department at UNLV and a member of the Center for Cybersecurity Research. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and Bachelor degree in Economics from Seoul National University in Korea. His specialty includes network security, Internet traffic analysis, high-speed switch design, software architecture, and real-time embedded software design. His Ph.D. dissertation, entitled "Towards Defeating Network Denial-of-Service Attacks ", discusses various methods for blocking a notorious cyberattack, Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack. He has published several research papers on the DDoS issues and more than 20 research papers in journals and conferences.

Before joining UNLV in 2004, he has been working in software and communication networking industry for several years . He was a Member of Technical Staff at Lucent Technologies developing the software for wireless networking equipments. While at Lucent, he was awarded with the Recognition of Excellence Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution. Dr. Kim also co-founded a New Jersey-based software company that developed a technology for delivering video advertising material over the Internet. He raised the seed funding and led the software development team for two years.

His other experiences include business information systems development at Andersen Consulting, patient financial database management at a medical facility, and robotic manufacturing system control software development, etc. He is currently serving as a technical board member for a Dallas, Texas-based company that specializes in blocking DDoS attacks, where he is involved in developing attack packet filtering algorithms. Dr. Kim is a member of the ACM, IEEE Computer Society and Communication Society.
